I think stressful would be an understatement right about now. These last couple weeks of class are going to be nothing but work. Lesson plans, unit plans, clinicals, virtual museums, finals and lacrosse on top of all of that. It is definitely crunch time!
This week in Washington I was able to have my own group again for about 40 minutes and do reading and questions with them. I had a lower level group of students and the teacher had me read a 4th grade level story with them even though they are only in second grade. The students were able to read the passage fluently, but they were not able to answer the questions at the end. When I asked them questions throughout the passage, they were able to answer, but the questions at the end that asked reasons about why the 19th amendment got passed, the students were not able to answer. Even though the students could not answer these questions because they were not found directly in the passage, I asked them questions to get them thinking about the answer which helped them to solve the problem and understand the reasoning of why it was the correct answer. This type of teaching would fall under NCTPS 4 which is Teachers Facilitate Learning for Their Students under the category "teachers help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills." Washington continues to be a great experience and gives us a chance to work hands on with the students.
During Thursday's class, our flipped lessons will be taught. I am excited to learn and get ideas from my other classmates. I think it will be a great experience because this is the first time that anyone has ever taught a flipped lesson.
This week I also went back to the museum that I chose in Kings Mountain to take pictures using the street view app. This app is so cool and when you put the pictures in the actual cardboard you feel like you are actually at the museum. This is a great tool to use if the school does not have the funds to take their whole class on a field trip. The teacher can visit the museum, take 360 3D pictures on this app. and have her students use the google cardboard and they will feel like they are actually at the museum. Students will love this because it uses technology and they get to see 360 3D pictures that make you feel like you are actually there. This works perfectly for my outside research, which is how to make the classroom better by using technology. Below is the link to the app.

Lindsay,
ReplyDelete"Stress, stress, and more stress" is probably the most accurate representation of our lives right now. I could not image trying to balance being an athlete and school, at the same time. Props to you! I think it's wonderful that you are getting to work on literacy so intensively with your Washington students. I wish I had more responsibility in my classroom. That's so cool, I also chose the Kings Mountain museum for my project. (Admission was free-whoop whoop!) That app sounds really beneficial. Thanks for sharing! I hope your weekend is stress-free, as much as possible!
Lindsey, stressed definitley is an understatement for this week! I really enjoy working with the small groups on Tuesdays, it given a great opportunity to learn how to meet different students needs especially when giving them upper level material. I really enjoyed watching everyone teach their flipped lessons and I am looking forward to teaching mine on Monday! Hope you have a relaxing weekend!
ReplyDeleteLindsey, I honestly couldn't agree more with your opening statement! It is officially crunch time. I love hearing about your experiences at Washington. It sounds like you are getting so much out of being in your classroom and that is such a great thing to have before student teaching. It sounds like you were able to get some experience in differentiation on the spot this week and that is something that we cannot get enough of right now. Hopefully, everything starts to calm down a little here soon!
ReplyDeleteLindsey,
ReplyDeleteI am right there with you feeling very stressed and overwhelmed! There are not enough hours in the day. I think it is great that you are getting that experience at Washington and that your teacher is letting you take over some! That is such great practice for student teaching as you will have to become very comfortable in front of the class and with groups such as guided reading and math groups. Hang in there and keep pushing through, the summer is near!

Yes - keep on trying out ways to intentionally build critical thinking in the classroom!
